By the end you will be able to
  • Describe video as rapid still images
  • Explain frames per second in plain words

Lesson 1 of 3

A flipbook on screen

Old animation toys showed drawings on pages you flipped quickly. Video does the same digitally: frame, frame, frame, usually twenty-four or thirty per second.

Your brain blends them into motion. Each frame is still a grid of RGB pixels like a photo.

Step through the animation. See twelve frames become one second of movement.

Why clips feel huge

One HD photo is already millions of numbers. Multiply by thousands of frames and add audio samples. No wonder a short clip can beat hundreds of homework documents.

Compression helps, which is the next topic. Editors also lower resolution or frame rate for drafts.

Smooth games need high frame rates. Slide decks can use lower rates.

Lesson 3 of 3

Make conscious exports

For school, export what you need: 720p may be enough for a class presentation. 4K is for big screens, not every upload.

Next you will learn lossless and lossy compression tricks that shrink huge video files.

You now see video as numbers in time, not magic.
