Finish first

Lesson 1 of 3

Your day starts with a plan

Most school mornings repeat the same jobs. Alarm rings. You get dressed. You eat. You pack your bag. You leave. That pattern is a routine, and a routine is a kind of algorithm.

Some families write the list on a chart. Step one might be make the bed. Step two might be get dressed. The chart helps everyone remember nothing important gets skipped.

Watch the step-flow animation. Follow one child from alarm to the front door without jumping steps.

Lesson 2 of 3

Some steps block others

You cannot tie shoes before you put them on. You cannot zip a coat before you slide your arms in. Dependencies are steps that must finish before the next one starts.

Breakfast before brushing works for many kids. Brushing before breakfast works for others. The order can change if the result still makes sense.

Draw your routine as numbered boxes. Arrows show what must come first. If two steps do not need each other, you might swap them.

Lesson 3 of 3

Find the slow step

If you are late every Tuesday, one step might be too long. Maybe searching for socks eats five minutes. A plan fix: lay out clothes the night before.

Algorithms can be improved. You keep the same goal, get to school, but change the steps to be faster or calmer.

Next you will pack a bag using the same thinking. List what goes in, and in what order you pick each item.
